A major chunk of the villagers here depends on apple farming. Harsil and nearby areas, including Dharali, are known for apple production. After the flash floods, many residents lost their loved ones, farms, homes and hotels.
The agriculture department is preparing a list of farmers who lost their orchards to arrange compensation. The exact compensation amount for these losses has not yet been determined. As directed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the distribution of financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to each disaster-affected family in Dharali has begun.
Various agencies including the Police, SDRF, NDRF, and other disaster management teams are engaged in rescue efforts despite the challenging conditions.
The Gangotri National Highway remains blocked or damaged in several places. Work is underway to remove the debris and restore connectivity.
