HoaXposed: Minister shares picture of Korean floating solar plant, claims it’s in Kerala

The Kerala power minister shared a photo of what he claimed was a floating solar power plant but it turns out it was a fake.

Kerala’s Electricity Minister, MM Mani posted a picture Thursday in a tweet where he claimed that India’s largest floating solar plant was all set to start operations in Kerala’s Banasura Sagar reservoir in Wayanad.

The tweet, which was first shared at 7:16 am on 26 October, soon caught the attention of Canadian Greenpeace campaigner Mike Hudema.

Mani retweeted Hudema’s tweet, which read:As Trump tweets, India’s Largest Floating #Solar Plant Installed In Kerala Aims To Provide 24X7 Power.”

MM Mani’s unverified Twitter account had posted was an image of the LG CNS South Korean solar plant, under the caption saying “India’s largest floating solar plant”. Source: https://twitter.com/maniyashaan

The CPI(M) minister also posted the same image on his verified Facebook page, with both English and Malayalam descriptions explaining Kerala’s move to establish India’s largest floating solar plant.

However, a reverse Google Image Search of the solar plant photo revealed that the image is originally from the LG CNS’s Floating Solar Power Plant located at the Otae Reservoir of Sangju City, in South Korea’s Gyeongsang Bukdo Province.

The photograph features on the manufacturing giant’s official website, detailing how the LG CNS plant is “The World’s Largest Floating Photovoltaic Power Plant”.

When contacted by ThePrint, the Kerala Electricity Minister’s personal secretary said that MM Mani was unavailable to comment.
