Hyderabad: India defeated Australia by four wickets in the first semifinal of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. KL Rahul finished the chase, orchestrated brilliantly by Virat Kohli, to take India to the final. India will now face either New Zealand or South Africa in the title clash on Sunday.

Amid the excitement, a video surfaced on social media claiming that an Australian fan chanted ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ after Australia’s defeat. The video shows a cricket fan in an Australian jersey chanting slogans, with other fans joining in after each chant.

An Instagram user shared the video with the caption, “An Australian fan after they lost the semifinal against India in Champions Trophy 2025.” (Archive)

The video has a text overlay that reads, “This Australian man won our hearts – Australian fan after they lost the semifinals in Champions Trophy.”

Fact Check

NewsMeter found the claim to be misleading. The video is from 2021, during India’s victory at the Gabba in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

A keyword search led us to an India Times article published on 20 January 2021, titled “Australian Fan Chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ During India’s Big Win At Gabba, Is What Cricket Is All About.”

The article stated that India broke Australia’s 32-year unbeaten streak at the Gabba, winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1. On the fourth day of the final Test, an Australian fan was seen chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’, with Indian supporters joining in.

A screengrab from the India Times article matched the viral video, confirming that the clip was not from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but from the Gabba Test in 2021.

Further, an India Today report published on 21 January 2021, featured the same viral video. The report mentioned that after India’s historic win at Gabba, an Australian fan was heard chanting slogans in support of India, with Indian fans chanting along. The video was recorded on Day 4 of the Gabba Test.

India’s victory at Gabba was historic, as the team successfully chased a target of 328 runs, with Shubman Gill scoring 91 runs to help secure the series 2-1.

Therefore, the viral video does not show an Australian fan chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ after Australia’s loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semifinals. The video is from 2021, when India recorded a historic victory at the Gabba in Brisbane.
