Total Covid tests conducted in India cross 17 crore mark, positivity rate rises to 1.8%

New Delhi: In the past 24 hours, more than 11 lakh tests were conducted in India, taking the total number of Covid tests conducted since the beginning the pandemic beyond the 17 crore-mark.

The daily test positivity rate has increased slightly to 1.8 per cent. Active cases continue to decline overall, although Kerala saw a small rise in the case count.

In the last 24 hours, India reported 20,549 new cases of Covid-19 across the country. This comes just a day after 16,432 cases were recorded — the lowest since 23 June.

The number of active Covid-19 cases in the country fell to 2,62,272, as the number of recoveries continue to outnumber new cases for the 33rd consecutive day. This accounts for about 1.2 per cent of active cases in the world.

In the last 24 hours, 286 Covid deaths were reported across the country.

The total coronavirus death toll in India, since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 1,48,439. This accounts for 8.2 per cent of the total deaths globally.

Punjab’s case fatality remains at 3.20 — the highest in the country. Meanwhile, Maharashtra, which has recorded the highest number of Covid deaths in India, has the second highest CFR of 2.56.

Sikkim’s fatality rate is now 2.14. India’s overall case fatality rate is at 1.45.

As many as 11,20,281 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,200 government and 1,088 private laboratories in the last 24 hours.

A total of 17,09,22,030 tests have been carried out in India since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

India’s test positivity rate increased slightly to 1.8 per cent in the last 24 hours.

The overall test positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 5.9 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 26,572 Covid patients were discharged across the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic 98,34,141 people have recovered from the infection.

As many as 1,02,44,852 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in India since the beginning of the pandemic. The highest number of cases, so far, have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

States with highest active cases

Kerala’s active cases count — currently the highest in the country — increased to 65,039.

In the last 24 hours, 5,887 people tested positive for the virus, a significant increase from 3,047 cases reported yesterday. This has brought the total number of cases reported from the state to 7,49,450.

The state’s death toll rose to 3,014, with 24 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra’s active case count decreased to 55,672, with 3,018 people testing positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

A total of 19,25,066 cases have been detected from the state so far.

The state continues to report the highest number of daily deaths in the country, with 68 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. This has brought Maharashtra’s total Covid-19 toll to 49,373 — which makes up one-third of the total deaths in India so far.

In Uttar Pradesh, 1,021 new cases of Covid-19 and 18 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

The number of active cases in the state fell to 14,344, while the death toll rose to 8,340. So far, 5,83,941 cases of Covid-19 have been detected in the state.

West Bengal’s active case count dropped to 12,788, with 1,244 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

This brings the total number of cases, so far, to 5,49,715. Of these, 9,655 people have died, with 30 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Chhattisgarh reported 1,134 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. This has brought the total number of cases in the state to 2,77,471. Of these, 12,472 are active cases while 3,336 people have succumbed to the infection.
