India’s test positivity rate drops to 2%, Kerala’s cases increase for second consecutive day

New Delhi: India’s test positivity rate fell to 2 per cent Thursday, the lowest it has been since June. The number of new Covid cases have also remained below 30,000 this week while the total active cases has also declined.

However, the active case count in Kerala increased for the second day in a row, with over 6,000 new cases reported in a single day.

In the last 24 hours, 24,010 new cases of Covid-19 were detected across the country in the last 24 hours. This, however, does not include cases from Maharashtra, as official numbers of the state were not updated Thursday.

Active cases in the country fell to 3,22,366, although the number will likely be higher once Maharashtra reconciles its active case count.

As many as 355 deaths were reported from across the country in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 1,44,451.

Punjab’s case fatality rate, which has been the highest in the country for several months now, further increased to 3.18. Meanwhile, Maharashtra — the state with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths — has the second-highest CFR of 2.56.

Sikkim follows Maharashtra with a CFR of 2.24, however, the state has reported just three deaths since 11 December. India’s overall case fatality rate is now 1.45.

The total number of Covid tests conducted, in the last 24 hours, increased to 11,58,960. Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 15,78,05,240 Covid-19 tests have been carried out.

Two days after the test positivity rate dipped to a five-month low of 2.2, it further decreased to 2.0 per cent. However, this rate is likely to increase since Maharashtra’s cases have not been included in this figure.

The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, now stands at 6.3 per cent.

Recovered cases

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 94,89,740 people in India have recovered from Covid-19 infection, bringing the recovery rate to 95.31 per cent.

As many as 33,291 patients were discharged from across the country in the last 24 hours.

The total number of Covid cases detected in India so far is 99,56,557, which is second only to the US.

States with highest active cases

Maharashtra’s updated figures for Thursday are still awaited due to a data reconciliation activity in the state.

However, data reported by the state’s public health department reports that 4,304 people tested positive for the disease in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected in the state to 18,80,893.

Active cases in Maharashtra have dipped to 61,454. With 95 deaths reported, in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll climbed to 48,434.

In Kerala, the number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 in a single day increased to 6,185 — the highest among the active states. Active cases in the state increased to 58,339.

So far, Kerala has reported 6,83,440 cases of Covid-19, of which 2,707 have died. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 27 deaths.

West Bengal’s active caseload fell to 20,143. The state has the third-highest count of active Covid-19 cases in the country and has detected a total of 5,28,211 cases so far.

In the last 24 hours, 2,293 people have tested positive for Covid-19 and 46 people have died. West Bengal’s death toll has now increased to 9,191.

In the last 24 hours, 1,199 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Uttar Pradesh. This has brought the total number of cases detected in the state to 5,69,263.

Active cases in the state declined to 17,801. In the last 24 hours, 15 deaths were reported bringing the death toll to 8,118.

In Chhattisgarh, 1,661 new cases were reported in the state, which brings the state’s total Covid cases to 2,61,901.

The number of active cases have declined to 17,468, while death toll increased to 3,145. In the last 24 hours, 10 deaths were reported in the state.
