Singer Mohit Chauhan croons a number songs as Justices Kurian Joseph and K.M. Joseph sing solos in Hindi, English and Malayalam.

New Delhi: Two Supreme Court judges — Kurian Joseph and K.M. Joseph — took to the stage and sang songs in Hindi, English and Malayalam at a fund-raising event for Kerala flood victims Monday evening.

While Justice Kurian Joseph sang, We shall overcome along with singer Mohit Chauhan, K.M. Joseph sang two solos — in Hindi and Malayalam.

Chauhan also sang a Himachali folk song and another from the movie Jab We Met.

The evening also saw classical dance performances. The event, organised by a group of legal correspondents, was attended by judges from the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.

The function comes days after Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra announced that all the judges of the apex court donated Rs 25,000 each for Kerala relief work.

Attorney general K.K. Venugopal donated Rs 1 crore to the Kerala CM’s relief fund. Former attorney general Mukul Rohatgi contributed Rs 50 lakh towards relief and rehabilitation efforts in the disaster-hit state.

Last week, Justice Kurian Joseph, who belongs to Kalady in Kerala, was among dozens of volunteers who pitched in to collect materials for flood victims at the Indian Law Institute in the city.

He was also present at the second collection drive that was organised a few days later – where he stayed till 3 am. Back home in Kerala, Justice Kurian Joseph’s family is among the thousands of people who have been displaced because of the floods.

“There is no electricity and hence no phones. It is not just my family who is suffering there. Everyone in Kerala is my family,” Kurian Joseph told ThePrint.

“From the general information I have got today, things are in control near my home, but there are still some troubles in other areas,” he said.

K.M. Joseph, the newly inducted judge, has also sent relief materials to Kerala.
