Pune, Apr 12 (PTI) Noted classical singer Rahul Deshpande said the passing away of Asha Bhosle was an immense loss to the world of music as the legend “set the ultimate benchmark for how a singer should perform”.
Bhosle passed away on Sunday in a Mumbai hospital at the age of 92.
“The demise of Asha Bhosle is an immense loss to the world of music. It is an extremely painful and unfortunate incident. We singers owe a great deal to Ashatai. Whether it was Natyasangeet, film songs, devotional music, or even cabaret, she set the ultimate benchmark for how a singer should perform,” Deshpande said.
Her voice was not only versatile but also fluid and effortless, flowing like water, he added.
“The expressions and emotions she brought into her singing are something we are unlikely to experience again in our lifetime. In that sense, she has left an enduring legacy and has deeply influenced all of us,” Deshpande asserted.
He said he considered himself very fortunate to have spent even a little time with her.
“I had the honour of receiving an award from her, which felt like receiving her blessings. I will always cherish the memory of her visiting my grandfather to learn Natyageet from him,” Deshpande said. Desphande is the grandson of Marathi Natya Sangeet maestro Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande.
Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal working president Srinivas Joshi said Asha Bhosle shared a long-standing association and warm rapport spanning several decades with Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
“She had also sung playback on a couple of occasions with my father. They were even planning to collaborate on an album together, but for some reason, it could not materialise. On her passing today, we extend our heartfelt tributes to the great singer on behalf of our family,” Joshi, son of the legendary Bhimsen Joshi, said. PTI SPK BNM
