Memers descend on Galgotias over Chinese robodog row, spare none—departments, students, faculty

After Galgotias University sparked controversy by claiming a Chinese company’s robot dog as its own at the AI Summit, social media users stepped up their meme game.

New Delhi: While robot dogs at the Galgotias University pavilion made a lot of noise during the India AI Impact Summit 2026 Wednesday, eventually leading to their exit, standup comedians and memers made sure to be creative. Comic Vir Das shared a picture of his indie dog and urged people to adopt and not shop, because unlike the Galgotias robot, his is a pure desi canine.

One memer used the picture of actor Gal Gadot, who plays Wonder Woman in the DC Comics adaptation of the character. Underneath her name is written as ‘Gal Gadotia’, taking a dig at how Galgotias can claim anything as their own original creation.

A range of posts on X gave a glimpse of what a supposed head of a department at the Galgotias University would look like. Users showed little mercy.

Meanwhile, comedian Varun Grover took the poetic route and wrote in Hindi, “tum kitne galgotia pakdoge/har gali se galgotia niklega” (How many galgotias will you catch in a lie? There will be one in every nook and corner of India)

A meme page shared the image of a pair of white sneakers with ‘iPhone’ written on them to poke fun at how the university claimed the Chinese product as its own creation.

The same page shared another meme with a morphed image of billionaire US businessman Elon Musk posing in front of a car and a ‘desi’ background. It mentions that the recent ‘innovation’ has impressed Musk so much that he would now join the university too, but as a junior lab assistant.

One user named Arun Arora used the image of Ravan’s character from Ramayana TV show to take a dig at the university.

Another meme tried to create a response from the Indian government to the fiasco.

And what did the university actually do to the fate of the AI summit? It sunk it, big time.

A political cartoonist used the controversy to give his satirical take on the matter. He drew a cartoon of President Xi Jinping engaged in a tug of war with a Glagotias University student over Chinese robot dogs. The caption reads, “If you try to grab our land, we’ll grab your robots”, referring to the Galwan skirmish and China’s attempt to claim Arunachal Pradesh as their territory.

From Phir Hera Pheri to Dhurandhar

Many referenced familiar film dialogues and scenes from popular comedy movies of Bollywood to make fun of the university.

One meme showed a screengrab from the movie Phir Hera Pheri (2006), with actor Bipasha Basu in an office with ‘Laxmi Chit Fund’ written on a board behind her. It is captioned, ‘Finance department at Galgotias’. It refers to the fact that spending money on admission at the university is akin to investing in a scam like the one shown in the Priyadarshan film.

Another used a scene from the film Dhol (2007) to show how intelligence and engineering talent at the university are both absent.

If film scenes are being used, can the iconic painting of Majnu Bhai, played by Anil Kapoor from Welcome (2007), be far behind? It was also used to showcase what the Visual Arts department of the university probably looks like.

From Akshay Khanna in Dhurandhar to various scenes from Rajinikanth films were used to create memes.

But the star of these memes is without doubt Neha Singh, the head of department, communications at the School of Business, Galgotias University. In a later clarification, Singh explained that it was a miscommunication, and she never meant to claim the Chinese dog as the university’s own scientific feat. Her statement was picked up, and more memes followed thereafter.

One showed a morphed image with the busts of scientists Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Pythagoras tripling on a bike.

‘Einstein, Newton and Pythagoras going to Galgotias University after Neha Singh, a professor of Galgotias University says, “Your 6 can be my 9,”’ read the post.
