Mumbai, Apr 12 (PTI) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Sunday condoled the death of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, calling her voice one of the pillars of Indian cinema that would resonate across the world for centuries to come.

Bhosle, who stepped out of the shadow of her sister Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar with a genre-defying voice and created her own universe in Hindi playback singing, passed away due to multi-organ failure on Sunday.

The 92-year-old was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday evening due to a chest infection and exhaustion.

Shah Rukh shared a throwback photo with Bhosle on X and paid a heartfelt tribute to the singer, whom he affectionately called Asha Tai.

“It’s truly sad to learn about Asha Tai’s passing… her voice has been one of the pillars of Indian cinema and will continue to resonate world over for centuries to come. A talent that will outlive many, she always showered me with blessings and love and I will miss her. Rest in Peace Asha Tai… love you,” the superstar wrote.

One of the most versatile playback singers in the history of Indian cinema, Bhosle recorded over 12,000 songs across 20 languages in a career spanning eight decades. She was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

Her last rites will be performed at Shivaji Park on Monday. PTI RB RB RB
