New Delhi: Akshay Kumar was the chief guest at the trailer launch of the Hindi version of Mohanlal’s directorial debut, Barroz: Guardian of Treasure. The trailer launch of the 3D Malayalam film was held in Mumbai.

Barroz is a children’s fantasy film based on the novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure by Jijo Punnoose. Mohanlal plays the titular role. Other cast members include Maya, Cesar Lorente Raton, Ignacio Mateos, Komal Sharma, Guru Somasundaram, and Tuhin Menon.

“Barroz is very experimental in its look and it can also be risky because Mohanlal usually does more massy movies. So there is an element of uncertainty and have to wait and see how the content is,” said senior film critic Ramesh Bala.

The trailer shows Mohanlal as the friendly ghost who guards a treasure in a castle. The film is produced by the actor’s frequent collaborator Antony Perumbavoor under Aashirvad Cinemas, with music composed by 19-year old Lydian Nadhaswaram.

100 per cent professional

Kumar has starred in multiple Hindi remakes of Mohanlal films. They were directed by Priyadarshan, who has worked in both Malayalam and Hindi movies. Bhool Bhulaiya (2008) is a remake of Manichitrathazhu (1993), Garam Masala (2005) of Boeing Boeing (1985), and Khatta Meetha (2010) is a remake of Vellanakalude Nadu (1988).

Akshay turned up in a cop costume. He drove straight from a shoot.

“I love his films. I have seen most of the films that Priyadarshan has remade. He’s a brilliant actor. He’s also very punctual and he loves his profession. He’s a 100 per cent professional actor. I am not that professional!” said Mohanlal.

Kumar too shared his admiration of Mohanlal. “I am sure it will be a wonderful experience in theatres, and I personally look forward to seeing the reactions this film will receive. This will bring happiness to many children,” said Kumar.

Mohanlal was last seen on the big screen in Malaikottai Vaaliban, which released in January this year. It is a Malayalam-language epic action drama film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery. He also featured in Manorathangal, an anthology series based on MT Vasudevan Nair’s stories.

Barroz is set to release in theatres worldwide on 25 December, coinciding with the 44th anniversary of his on-screen debut in the 1980 film Manjil Virinja Pookkal.
