New Delhi: New Year celebrations are all about guilt-free indulgence. But not for everyone. This New Year’s Eve, comfort won over celebrations as khichdi remained the dish of choice for thousands. On 31 December, over 9,400 people ordered khichdi from Swiggy.

Aaj ke din bhi 9,410 log khichdi order kar rahe hai. Yeh log aaj 10 baje tak so bhi jayenge (Even today, 9,410 people are ordering khichdi. These people will be asleep by 10 pm),” read a post by Swiggy Food’s official X handle.

Khichdi wasn’t the lone comfort dish either. Around 4,244 people ordered upma, while 1,927 others in Bengaluru chose salads.

Adding to this, someone in Bengaluru ordered protein powder worth Rs 41,000.

As the evening progressed, Swiggy’s data captured how Indians turned to quick-commerce platforms to stock up on food and party essentials. Some orders truly stood out.

For instance, a man from Patiala ordered over 200 items in a single day, of which 108 were Kurkure. Another user from Nagpur placed 93 orders, while someone in Surat ordered from 22 unique restaurants.

“Not orders. Life choices. List toh poori karni hai na (one has to complete the list),” wrote Rohit Kapoor, Chief Executive Officer, Swiggy.

The quick-delivery platform also revealed that over 90,000 burgers were delivered by 9:30 pm. But India’s favourite food biryani won the battle by a far bigger margin.

By 7:30 pm, a staggering 2,18,993 plates of biryani had already been ordered. “King fr,” read the X post by Swiggy.

Desserts weren’t behind either. A total of 7,573 orders of gajar ka halwa were placed by 9:30 pm. Kapoor revealed that the top dessert picks along with gajar ka halwa on Swiggy were choco lava cake, rasmalai, and gulab jamun.

He added that the top sweet-tooth cities this New Year were Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad.

Swiggy also shared that over 6.6 crore ordered food for others in 2025, highlighting a growing trend of gifting and shared meals.

Gold, gifts, iPhones

New Year’s Eve orders weren’t restricted to food and party essentials. Some users made big-ticket purchases such as iPhones and gold.

“Biggest single orders today, just in. Bengaluru shopper picked up two iPhones for Rs 1.8L. 2026 has officially arrived in style,” Swiggy co-founder Phani Kishan wrote on X.

In another post, he added: “Tonight’s most heartwarming Instamart stat: nearly one in nine New Year’s Eve orders were placed for friends and family. Case in point a Mumbai user received gold worth Rs 1.45 lakh from a loved one.”

Another user from Patiala purchased gold coins worth Rs 6 lakh.

Yeh kaisi party ho rahi hai patiala mein (what kind of party is going on in Patiala),” the platform wrote on X.
