New Delhi: Voting in 49 constituencies across 6 states and 2 Union Territories has begun in the fifth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Polling is underway in 5 parliamentary seats in Bihar, 3 in Jharkhand, 13 in Maharashtra, 5 in Odisha, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, 7 in West Bengal and one each in J&K and Ladakh.
Key candidates in the fray in this phase include Union ministers Rajnath Singh (Lucknow), Piyush Goyal (Mumbai North), Smriti Irani (Amethi), Niranjan Jyoti (Fatehpur) and Kaushal Kishore (Mohanlalganj).
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi is also in the fray in this phase, contesting in the family bastion Rae Bareli which his mother Sonia Gandhi won in 2019.
Other key contestants include former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah in Baramulla, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya in Saran, and Shiv Sena-UBT leader Arvind Sawant in Mumbai South.

05:30 pm: Bollywood actor Salman Khan shows inked finger after casting vote at a polling booth in Mumbai. Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachan and Sonakshi Sinha also exercised their democratic right to vote in Mumbai.

04:40 pm: With the fifth phase of elections live, here is a look at two significant women candidates – Smriti Irani from Amethi and Rohini Acharya from Saran.
3:30 pm: Actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh cast their votes in a polling station in Mumbai. Deepika Padukone can be seen with a baby bump.
2:10 pm: As of 1 pm, ECI recorded voter participation of 36.73 per cent in Phase 5 of the Lok Sabha elections in six states and two union territories. Here’s a state breakdown:
Ladakh UT leads with 52.02 per cent, followed by West Bengal (48.41%) and Jharkhand (41.89%).
Meanwhile, Maharashtra continues to have poor voter turnout at 27.78 per cent.
01:50 pm: Former Congress President and candidate from Wayanad (Kerala) and Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh) arrives for inspection at the Raebareli polling booth.
01:15 pm: Police detain three Shiv SenaI(UBT) workers for allegedly installing dummy EVMs near a polling station in Mumbai. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Rait attacks the BJP after the move.
He says, “Dummy EVM was kept more than 100 metres away from the polling station, for the people who do not know how to cast their votes…BJP knows that their candidate is going to lose from here so they are using the Police to put pressure on us, but Shiv Sena (UBT) will not get scared by all this…”

12:25 pm: BJP MP and candidate from Hooghly, Locket Chatterjee gets into an argument with a man claiming to be a poll agent at a polling station in Dasghara High School under Hooghly Lok Sabha Constituency. Chatterjee alleged that he was a TMC agent. She later took that person out of the polling station.

10:50 am: Arjun Singh, the BJP candidate for the Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency, and a TMC worker get into an argument in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Singh claims that TMC officials are stopping people from leaving their homes to vote in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections. Heavy police deployment is seen in the area.

10:30 am: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh casts his vote in a polling station in Lucknow. He is also BJP’s candidate from the same constituency.
