Kolkata, Mar 12 (PTI) The West Bengal government on Thursday called for a transformation in the long-held perception about the ease of doing business in the state, asserting that it has been undertaking several concrete initiatives to strengthen the investment climate.
Secretary of the Department of Industry, Commerce and Enterprises Vandana Yadav said public investment in physical infrastructure has increased significantly in recent years, with the state witnessing nearly eleven-fold expansion in key infrastructure development, including construction of bridges, roads and other connectivity projects, according to a statement.
Addressing the Annual Session of Bharat Chamber of Commerce here, she highlighted that the state government has adopted a forward-looking policy framework centred around the development of six industrial and economic corridors, designed to stimulate regional industrial growth and improve connectivity across the state.
Yadav noted that the state is also focusing on expanding economic activity in knowledge-driven sectors such as information technology, tourism, logistics and other services.
She added that many of the government’s infrastructure and development projects are being supported by leading multilateral institutions such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, “which reflects growing confidence in the state’s development initiatives.” The official commended the chamber for mobilising MSMEs through awareness programmes to integrate them into the defence manufacturing ecosystem.
She observed that West Bengal’s existing industrial strengths, particularly in iron and steel, engineering and manufacturing, can play an important role in strengthening the state’s participation in the expanding defence manufacturing value chain.
Yadav emphasised that industry and government must work in close partnership to unlock the full economic potential of the state and the eastern region.
Bharat Chamber of Commerce President Naresh Pachisia said the chamber, as it celebrates its 125th year, remains deeply committed to strengthening the partnership between industry and government for the economic advancement of West Bengal and the country. PTI BSM NN
