New Delhi: The US Republican Majority on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs late Wednesday took aim at The New York Times, over their reportage on the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

“Hey, @nytimes we fixed it for you. This was a TERRORIST ATTACK plain and simple. Whether it’s India or Israel, when it comes to TERRORISM the NYT is removed from reality,” the House Foreign Affairs Committee Majority posted on the social media platform X.

The post came in response to a headline by the American newspaper describing the Pahalgam attack being carried out by “militants” rather than “terrorists.”

Four terrorists with AK47 rifles sprayed bullets on tourists in Baisaran valley, a few kilometres from Pahalgam, as reported by ThePrint earlier.

The attack left at least 25 Indian nationals and one foreign national dead. The attack, according to Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, “came in the wake of the successful holding of elections in the Union Territory and its steady progress towards economic growth and development”.

The comments by the Majority in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs comes as the US administration under President Donald J. Trump and the Republican Party have stood firmly in support of India following the Pahalgam attack. The House Committee on Foreign Affairs is a standing committee in the American House of Representatives with jurisdiction over bills and investigations pertaining to foreign affairs.

Trump called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi late Tuesday night, while the latter was in Jeddah during an official visit to Saudi Arabia. This followed a post on the social media platform Truth Social by Trump, declaring the US’ “full support” to India.

“President Donald Trump @realDonaldTrump @POTUS called PM @narendramodi and conveyed his deepest condolences at the loss of innocent lives in the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.  President Trump strongly condemned the terror attack and expressed full support to India to bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous attack. India and the United States stand together in the fight against terror,” Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a post on X.

American Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a post on X, also declared that the “US stands with India”. India has received bipartisan support from lawmakers in the US after the Pahalgam attack.

India has also received support from all the G7 (Group of Seven) Western economies, which includes the US, the UK, the European Union, Italy, Germany, France, Canada and Japan. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was the last to convey his condolences over the attack late Wednesday evening, but did not mention India in his statement.

India late Wednesday announced a number of punitive measures against Pakistan including holding in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty, the decrease in strength of the diplomatic missions from 55 to 30, the expulsion of defence advisers and annulling these posts, as well the cancellation of visas to Pakistani nationals.
