India has decided to offer immediate relief assistance worth $1 million to Papua New Guinea in the wake of a devastating landslide hitting the country last Friday, said a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The landslide reportedly buried hundreds of people and caused major destruction and loss of life, and India has conveyed its readiness to extend all possible support and assistance to the Pacific island country in its difficult time, the MEA statement said.
As a close friend and partner of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC), India has decided to extend $1 million in immediate relief assistance as a gesture of solidarity with the people of Papua New Guinea.
India has firmly supported Papua New Guinea in times of difficulty and devastation caused by natural disasters, and this decision is another testament to the strong relationship between the two countries, said the MEA statement.
The Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), launched by India in November 2019, focuses on disaster risk reduction and management, and the country is committed to providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), added the MEA statement.
