Building Bridges: How Areen Barzani Is Redefining Kurdistan’s Role in the Gulf’s Cultural and Economic Diplomacy

In the Gulf, skyscrapers rise beside centuries-old souqs, and ports hum with goods bound for continents away. Economic diversification plans are rewriting national priorities, placing culture, tourism, and innovation alongside oil and gas in the hierarchy of influence. This transformation has created space for new regional partnerships, and for Kurdistan, it is an opening to tell a different story – one built not on the language of conflict, but on culture, sustainability, and shared prosperity.

Areen Masrour Barzani, philanthropist and founder of the Kurdistan Foundation, is working to position Kurdistan in this emerging Gulf network. His strategy blends cultural diplomacy with economic engagement, using the foundation’s programs as a platform for cooperation that resonates beyond politics.

Culture as a Doorway to Cooperation

Gulf capitals have become global stages for art fairs, heritage festivals, and cultural exchanges. The Kurdistan Foundation has invested in projects that preserve Kurdish traditions, promote the language, and support emerging artists—initiatives that could travel easily to exhibitions in Doha or Dubai.

Volunteer.KRD, one of the foundation’s entities, has trained more than 1500 youth in 2025 in skills such as public speaking, crisis management, and social media. These competencies prepare young Kurds to participate in cross-border events and collaborations, equipping them to represent Kurdistan in cultural and civic settings across the Gulf.

Empower.KRD, another key initiative, has been at the forefront of showcasing Kurdish youth talent. In partnership with Qatar Foundation’s Qatar Debate program, Kurdistan Foundation organized the largest debate in Kurdistan’s history, gathering more than 400 students and 20 judges. Qatar’s trainers designed the curriculum, shared instructional resources, and prepared judges to ensure international standards. The debate was held in two simultaneous tracks, one in English and one in Kurdish, with the final event combining both languages on the same stage. A Qatar Debate instructor served as a judge in that final, demonstrating the program’s commitment to excellence and cross-cultural engagement.

The Kurdistan Foundation also turned culture into diplomacy during a recent visit welcoming a high-level delegation from the UAE, led by the Minister of State and Special Envoy to Kurdistan for Economic Affairs. As part of the meeting introducing the Foundation’s mission, a young Kurdish medical student and hobby painter, Ms. Avin, presented the minister with a special artwork depicting the Erbil Citadel and the Burj Khalifa seamlessly integrated into one canvas. The minister was deeply impressed, and only days after the visit, Ms. Avin was personally invited to the UAE to participate in an international art fair. This moment exemplifies Kurdistan Foundation’s role in transforming youth creativity into opportunities for international cultural exchange.

Economic Links Through Shared Priorities

Kurdistan’s economic diversification goals align with the Gulf states’ own transformation agendas. The Kurdistan Foundation’s Jobs.KRD initiative, which has conducted over 30 trainings for more than 1,500 participants, focuses on skills that can support tourism, service industries, and entrepreneurship sectors where Gulf investment is expanding.

Heritage tourism is one clear overlap. By linking Jobs.KRD’s skill development to the needs of tourism operators and cultural institutions, Kurdistan can present itself as both a destination and a partner in the Gulf’s growing visitor economy.

Environmental projects under Climate.KRD also aligns with Gulf sustainability drives. Installing 500 recycling bins, distributing 1,100 reusable tote bags, and introducing environmentally friendly outdoor learning spaces and access to clean drinking water through the Green 100 Schools campaign all create opportunities for knowledge exchange and joint investment with Gulf states leading in sustainability initiatives.

Diplomacy That Extends Beyond Politics

Kurdistan Foundation has opened new diplomatic channels while reinforcing its vision for youth engagement. In Bahrain, the Foundation was invited to join the Hope Network, leading an official delegation to meet with the Minister of Youth Affairs and the Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports. The delegation toured Youth City, a hub for innovation and civic engagement, where the Bahraini Minister suggested Kurdish youth could participate in future programs.

This visit also highlighted the Foundation’s own investment in youth infrastructure: Kurdistan has established the region’s largest Youth Hub, providing spaces for skill-building, cultural exchange, and civic engagement. By linking the experiences of Youth City in Bahrain with the resources of Kurdistan’s Youth Hub, the Foundation is positioning Kurdish youth to be active participants in regional initiatives, creating opportunities for collaboration, exchange, and leadership.

Kurdistan’s political realities, including its relationship with Baghdad and its position in Middle Eastern geopolitics, can complicate traditional diplomacy. Leading with culture, skills, and sustainability, the Kurdistan Foundation creates engagement channels that are less vulnerable to political shifts.

This model also fosters people-to-people connections. A youth leader trained through Volunteer.KRD, who presents at a Gulf conference, an artisan whose work is exhibited in a Gulf gallery, or a school principal in Erbil who exchanges best practices on green school initiatives with peers in Abu Dhabi — these are the small but cumulative exchanges that build resilience into regional ties.

Celebrating Leadership and Innovation: The Ganjina Initiative

Created by the Kurdistan Foundation, Ganjina honours individuals who are actively shaping the future of Kurdistan. The initiative recognizes those whose contributions to culture, education, innovation, social progress, and community service have created meaningful and lasting change.

Ganjina is designed not as a ranking or competition, but as a platform to highlight, document, and celebrate real achievements. It brings attention to the stories behind each accomplishment, offering recognition to those who lead with vision, courage, and integrity. By showcasing these changemakers, the Foundation amplifies examples of leadership and inspires a new generation of Kurds to contribute to their society in impactful ways.

Through Ganjina, the Foundation showcases leaders who embody vision, courage, and integrity, positioning Kurdistan as a hub of talent and innovation. By celebrating these stories internationally, the initiative underscores how local action can resonate globally, aligning with broader goals of cultural exchange, sustainable development, and civic leadership.

Reframing Kurdistan’s Role

Barzani’s efforts in the Gulf aim to complement formal diplomacy rather than replace it. His initiatives focus on fostering mutual understanding and creating practical cooperation.

Engagement through the foundation’s programs, including skills training, cultural promotion, and environmental action, allows Kurdistan to position itself as a contributor in Gulf spaces rather than merely a recipient.

In a region where influence increasingly flows through culture, knowledge, and sustainability, these bridges could redefine how Kurdistan is seen—and how it shapes its own future in the Gulf’s interconnected economy.
