Why do you think she she finds ‘aurat’ and not ‘woman’ misogynistic? She explicitly says the “phenomenon is not unique to our language” and then points out it is so in English where women meant “little men”and woman went on to indicate wife. Looks like you read the first line, got upset and wrote your comment that attacked her American education. Interesting that the author predicted such reactions, which you would’ve known if you read the article:
“It is no secret that feminism is often co-opted by many to be viewed as a Western construct which marginalises non-Western identities. Western hegemony over feminist movements then feeds into a repulsion towards feminism that is found in countries such as Pakistan.”
Such as but not exclusive to Pakistan, i might add.
I really do not know whether the term “AURAT” etymologically means what the author says but I do know that the term “WOMAN” is definitely etymologically linked to the term “MEN”. Any number of imaginative stories can be created around it.
So, for another American trained liberal, I would like to point out why WOMAN is not misogynistic while AURAT is? Is it because English is a western or a holier language which is devoid of misogyny?
Language is language used to convey emotions & meaning. It is not the fault of the words created by humans and every word, good or bad, has its role in communication. So, nitpicking over which word should be used, as long as the meaning remains the same, just shows that studying at Harvard does not bring about maturity.
This is what we find surprising about left liberals. Their arguments are inherently illogical and devoid of basis in reality i.e if you can get your head around their long winded arguments and senseless use of vocabulary.
