The Hindu fundamentalists have been fostering hatred and violence against Muslims and other minorities for over twenty years and the result is that they are leading Indian society back to the stone age. There is no law and order and the legal system is so slow and corrupt that there is no justice either.
Every day the news is full of politicians talking about nothing but their own narrow, bigoted religious concerns. They are not talking about how to resolve the problems of the farmers, or how to tackle the environmental problems – India has some of the most dangerously polluted cities and it is almost bottom of the league when it comes to the safety of women.
The government is not interested in the real problems facing half the people of India. It has failed to improve relations with neighbouring countries, so China is stepping in and increasing its influence all round. In the meantime, India is busy lynching suspected cow-killers.
The officer’s approach was commendable rather adorable. But the question is how many officers uphold the same spirit and sincerity. There is peace and harmony(though in small parts) due to such honest officers. The dire challenge is the political class which disturbs the harmony by instigating the innocent people just to increase vote-banks. It can’t be fulfilled if the harmony continues. Hatred and angst begin to prevail in the atmosphere and divisive forces are at fore. In conclusion, such officers must be deputed to the block level, surpassing the so-called netas(leaders). It needs to be persistent.
Kudos to officers like Mr Vijay Shankar Pandey. Our country would have progressed far ahead if they didn’t have to take orders from regressive minded politicians. Half the time and energy they have had to spend on rectifying the wrongs done by our “people’s representatives”.
I volunteer to vouch for what this bureaucrat has written as I was in Ayodhya to cover post-demolition of the disputed structure for about three weeks. He was for development, a no-nonsense bureaucrat, entrusting the work regarding to the dispute to an Additional District Magistrate who was referred to as ADM ( Ramlala). After a few years, he continued to retain vigour for daring to lead the introspection drive among bureaucrats to name three most dishonest bureaucrats in Uttar Pradesh. Then he was one of the joint secretaries, hailing from Kanyakubja sub-sect among the Brahmins, picked up by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, as Union Human Resources Development in Vajpeyi Government. Had he written about Wasiuddin Siddiqui alias Waso Khan, convenor of the local unit of the Babri Masjid Action Committee in Faizabad, it would have been a tribute to that secular man who was the only Muslim, living in a predominated Hindu locality. His Hindu neighbours won’t allow him to move to his palatial newly built house in the outskirts of the city. He was married to a Hindu girl, his love since his days in Lucknow University.
