I read the whole write up and also the comments from some of the readers. They speak something irrelevant rather than writing their views whether the above mentioned are facts or not. I concur with the writer that the fall in standards of education commenced during the last DMK and AIADMK rules.
We have seen mushroom growth of Engineering Colleges in TN i.e., more than 500 colleges which are taking the students from the Plus Two passed out candidates . While there are no entrance test for admission it is done based on marks scored in the plus two exams
Some of the Private Boarding schools in and around Rasipuram Namakkal Erode etc produce 100% results with centum in all 3 subjects. Then the schools are being managed by local politicians and as well the private engineering colleges. Now the whole game of securing marks and also admission is ensured
When these graduates come out of colleges to get employment in Campus interviews or any other common exams for job they could not fare well and not able to secure the jobs. Recently one of the ex VC of Anna University expressed displeasure in our Education system which is not really addressing the students future in securing jobs or pursuing higher studies in reputed IIT or IIM.
There’s a huge difference between literacy rate and educational knowledge.
Although NCERT has one of the best educational syllabus and the most importantly the political issues should not be indulge with the education system.
Despite the author’s assessment on the public education system in Tamilnadu’s schools, the college/University level education in Tamilnadu (both private and government) is well reputed and ahead of other Southern states. Why is that?
TN students due to their school system are not able to compete in national level entrance exams because they are not tested rigorously in their schools and boards.
Those students in TN who are able to afford entrance exam coaching get selected in national level prestigious colleges. There appears to be a private sector education lobby in TN which wants captive students , ie TN students to study in TN colleges only. most of such private colleges in TN are run by politicians or well-connected. That is why you have well known universities there like Amrita, SRM, VIT etc. Contrast this to AP where students do extremely well at national level exams due to the coaching industry in Hyderabad. But in AP they don’t have attractive private sector universities yet . Perhaps AP politicians are not that smart as those in TN!
Since they are producing talented person like Abdul kalam, sunder pichai,Indranoyee, ramanujan,CV Raman, shiv Nagar, Radha Krishnan etc… Lot’s of love to Tamil people and their education system is one of the best in India love from Odisha ….
In India, state governments put school kids of various capabilities on the same bus by dumbing down the syllabus / exams then they hope weak kids will pass. But this kind of system does injustice to brighter kids in such schools.. Brighter kids from rural areas are particularly at a big disadvantage as they don’t have the syllabi and exam prep resources to compete at national levels.
It is better to identify kids in government schools who are found to be intelligent early enough and give them much more tougher material at school levels and more challenging teachers. For the average and below average kids, just give them the regular syllabus/exams that can ensure they pass their exams. Don’t bring bright children to the level of average children please. Brighter children need more stimulation and challenge, their academic potential should not be wasted.
What nonsense. Why do patients from North India come to Tamilnadu for their serious ailments and surgeries. Why do NIRF rankings show TN govt engineering colleges and TN private colleges better than those in other states. Why are TN medical and engineering colleges better administered as compared to other states. Let TN children (or for that matter children anywhere in India) enjoy their childhood instead of cramming bookish knowledge.
CBSE education is too much of an artificial pressure cooker and prides it’s syllabus on bookish knowledge. Even in a country like USA or UK their school system do not have tough syllabi and exams like we do in India. Yet their scientists, engineers, doctors, bureaucrats are much better problem solvers as is evidenced by their innovation and material progress.
Our education system should focus on developing in children skills of problem solving, critical thinking, emotion control, communication and rationality. Once these basics are there in children any field of knowledge can be pursued. Too much bookish focus has ensured that we cannot fully design equipment like a bulldozer, a radar or a surgical equipment in India. I will bet even our Tejas has many imported parts!
India sent its two best states Tamil Nadu & Himachal Pradesh to participate 2009 PISA Test.
The result shock the world with Bottom Last across all categories, smashing the faked image of Indians are world best talents that helm all West corps.
If Indians are truly so talented, why its aveIQ=75 far below most nations including Pak & Bdesh?
Why there is not a single worthy software, Apps, gadget, technology, invention, business model, enterprise …ever develop by India/Indian, including all these Indian CEOs?
Is Germans, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Singaporean, Asean…all less capable than Indians? Yet they invented most of the best technologies and run largest home grown enterprises.
I saw in a YouTube video that South Korean students found difficult to crack the IIT entrance paper. They find difficulty of the questions in the IIT paper equal to what they study only in their first year of college.
I doubt even 12th grade students in USA, Canada, Australia or UK they will be able to perform well in our national college entrance exams.
Many developed nations do not have entrance exams conducted by the government on such a scale and importance as in India. Their syllabi for science and maths at school level is less difficult as compared to India. Yet after college these nations have graduates (at least their top talent) that go on to start businesses that are really creative, innovative. It seems our educators are more interested in making sure our children cram previous knowledge rather than giving them tools to think and express themselves confidently when they face totally new problems. Education should be about increasing the capability of the mind to solve problems, not merely stuffing in knowledge.
