A very satirical & easy way to make policy is for PM Modi to do exactly the opposite of what @The Print & other Congress led cronies say!!
Sure, UK is relatively weak after Brexit but stays a member of the hegemonic P5 UN security council!!
India must substantially improve it’s trade relations with UK!! UK must also be encouraged to say sorry for their crimes & say the truth regarding congress & British anti India & Anti Hindu politics since 250 years!!
Meanwhile, India must also reform to improve it’s competitiveness as also improve trade/cultural relations relations with Asean & other Asian actors!!
The title of a counter article should be: WHY Modi govt’s policy for India must turn to it’s splendid history & culture to learn useful lessons on trade & discard the colonially enslaved, dhimmi & English/coconut mindset!!
Multi dimensional & multi faceted policies are a must to promote Indian trade & economic well being!!
How is it that this same India had 30% of global trade before Islamic & Christian invasions?? WHY can’t India build on it’s historical lineage??
A mono factor analysis like that of the author is based on trade statistics alone which have their merit but ignore others factors like domestic policies on education, culture, teaching of history or obsession with English in Indian schools & society!!
Also, all nations of the world trade more with their immediate geographical area!! Any barriers to trade including ideological/cultural, trade blocks or geo-politics must be tackled to increase trade in Asia/neighborhood while building edifices with Europe/America!!
Trying to encourage free-trade while also upholding protectionism under the guise of “atmanirbhar Bharat?” You cannot have your cake and eat it too! You either open up to trade, or you don’t.
@Khan: Have some knowledge about the world instead of engaging in what-aboutery & ignorance!!
USA, the so called liberal democracy is not liberal as seen with black people’s segregation and is an established plutocracy, NOT democracy!!
Biden after coming to power instituted America first, aatmnirbhar legislation & has even run away from Asian free trade agreement; just like Trump!!
The trick is to balance national interests while increasing trade & domestic/international competition which blind ideologues like you won’t understand!!
Nobody comments why for 6 years our exports did not grow an inch and in up a it was clocking 20% growth every year fat with eu is impossible as we r not making our duty regime competitive low duties encourage value chain investments with us n UK their r more impediments in farm imports as these countries don’t much to export other than arms it products
There may be natural allies and partners in geopolitics. None whatsoever in economics and international trade / investment. Consider the fact that China is the largest trading partner for more than a hundred countries. Including the largest, most consequential. Our economy has to be globally competitive. Integrated into value chains that snake through Asia. Losing our nerve at the last minute over joining RCEP could be seen as lack of self confidence. If we cannot compete with Laos and Cambodia, little hope that FTAs can be forged with the US and EU. Outside the EU, Britain will cease to matter.
Domestic & International monopolistic entities (public sector, farmer middle men, google/face book..) have to be broken so that India can change!!
Innovative, patriotic & competitive practices from education to business, to R&D, to media & politics, have to be institutionalized to produce a competitive India!!
