Now, as Trump rains down tariffs on friends and foes, liberal and Left parties running on anti-US nationalism are winning — from UK to Canada and Australia. It’s reactionary politics. Either way, US remains the centre of global gravity.

Vizhinjam port’s backed by Congress, Left & BJP. India needs more of this political consensus

The Vizhinjam port was cleared by the Congress at the Centre in 2011, embraced by the Left Front in Kerala, fully backed by the Modi/BJP government and built by Adani. It shows what a combination of good politics and robust capitalism work in concert can achieve. India needs many Vizhinjams.

  1. A more compelling case for national security, but increasingly so for economic development as well. A national consensus. That would enable the structural reforms that have been put off for too long.

  2. Despite President Trump, not because of him. Recall Mr Sharad Pawar’s long standing grouse that the Congress behaves like a zamindar, some of whose estates have melted away.
