HANOI (Reuters) -Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party has set January 19-25 as the dates for its five-yearly congress to define the country’s main strategies and policies, state media reported on Thursday.

The congress will elect the Party Central Committee, its top decision-making body with around 180 members, reported Lao Dong Newspaper, citing a party document.

The committee is then expected to elect the politburo, whose members include the party’s general secretary, state president, prime minister and parliament chair, among others.

The congress will discuss and approve four key reports, including one on the progress of the country’s reform programme (Doi Moi) that began 40 years ago that formed its “socialist-oriented market economy”, according to the report.

In a document prepared for the congress that was released last week, the party said it would aim for annual gross domestic product growth of at least 10% for the 2026-2030 period.

“The congress determines the thinking, vision, and strategic decisions for us to firmly move forward in the new era, successfully implementing the country’s development goals by 2030,” the report cited the party as saying.
