New Delhi: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will face a vote of confidence from lawmakers in the governing Conservative Party later on Monday, amid concerns from his colleagues that he has lost the authority to govern Britain.
A vote would take place between 6 and 8 pm on Monday and the results declared immediately afterwards, news agency Reuters reported.
Johnson faces severe criticism after a report documented alcohol-fuelled parties at his official residence 10, Downing Street, when Britain was under strict lockdown due to Covid.
Senior civil administrator Sue Gray’s report blames the UK government for breaking Covid lockdown guidelines for 20 months. Gray’s report also listed fights and alcohol-induced vomiting at these parties.
Dozens of Conservative Party lawmakers have questioned Johnson’s ability to be in office as Britain faces the risk of recession and inflated prices of essential items.
If a majority of lawmakers remove Johnson later Monday, a leadership contest will determine his successor.
Johnson, 57, was made Prime Minister in 2019.
