New Delhi: The Indian embassy in Ukraine, shuttered three weeks after Russia’s invasion of the country, will reopen in Kyiv on 17 May.
The embassy was temporarily relocated to Warsaw, Poland on 13 March after nearly 20,000 Indian students and citizens were evacuated under the government mission, Operation Ganga.
Two weeks before it shut, the embassy had moved out of Kyiv and was overseeing the evacuation process from its camp office in Lviv.
But the embassy shut altogether in the middle of March after Russia intensified attacks on Lviv, a town near the Polish border. Operation Ganga had wound down by then.
Diplomatic life has slowly returned to Kyiv from the end of April. Embassies of the European Union and NATO members opened first, with the Netherlands returning 29 April.
Nearly 20 countries are back in Kyiv, confident that the worst of Russia’s attack on the capital may be over.
It is understood that Joe Biden’s administration is also accelerating plans to reopen its embassy in Kyiv.
