Kathmandu, Jul 14 (PTI) CPN-Maoist Centre Chairman and Nepal’s former premier Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ Monday offered his party’s support to the government to amend the Constitution to institutionalise the rights of marginalised communities.

In his address to the House of Representatives, Prachanda said that Constitutional amendments are necessary to ensure the inclusion and recognition of those who have historically been neglected.

“There is a need for a forward-looking amendment to the Constitution in areas such as governance structure, electoral system, provincial names and boundaries, fiscal federalism, and social justice,” he said.

He offered the support of his party, which is the main opposition, as a two-thirds majority is required for any amendment. “I am ready to take the responsibility of securing the required majority as the leader of the main opposition,” he said.

He also slammed the K P Sharma Oli government for its failure to amend the Constitution as per its earlier promises. “The working style of the government itself is posing a greater threat to democracy and republic system, rather than the threat posed by monarchists,” he said.

“Almost a decade has passed since the promulgation of the Constitution (in September 2015), and we are yet to formulate necessary laws,” he added.

Prachanda accused that the coalition government formed by the two largest parties – the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML – has made the Parliament a playground for brokers.

“The government has failed to deliver services to the people, check corruption, ensure good governance and introduce economic reforms,” he added. PTI SBP ZH ZH ZH
