Remarkable Recovery of a Complex Thyroid Cancer Patient after CABG and Cancer Surgery – Story of Resilience and Surgical Expertise

Surgical oncology is the mainstay of any cancer treatment. It involves the removal of the cancerous growth and attempts to prevent the spread of cancer. Oncologists are constantly trying to reduce patient trauma and help them regain their health as much as possible.

Bangalore-based Dr. Sandeep Nayak successfully treated a case of papillary thyroid cancer who was also diagnosed with a coronary heart condition. With meticulous planning and coordination, he and his medical team performed both the surgeries in a single procedure with great success along with the cardiothoracic surgery team lead by Dr. Vivek Jawali. Today, the patient is cancer-free and is healthy.

Dr. Sandeep Nayak is among the leading oncologists in India with expertise in laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. He and his team offer comprehensive cancer treatment including suitable surgery to remove the cancerous growth, affected tissues and organs along with chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and so on.

Mrs. Vishaka Goyal, co-founder of ClinicsSpots (a doctor discovery platform) recommends Dr. Sandeep Nayak. She states, ‘Dr. Sandeep Nayak is a genius in robotic surgery. She commends his surgical precision and caliber. Also, he is one of the most down-to-earth and patient-centric doctors who relate to their patients’s agony and strive to treat them in the best possible manner.’

Dr. Sandeep Nayak shares a challenging cancer story of a 69-year-old throat cancer patient who approached him for thyroid cancer treatment. He had papillary thyroid cancer that had infiltrated into the trachea (windpipe) and recurrent nerve (the nerve for voice) on the left side. Further evaluation revealed that he had a coronary heart disease with an 80% blockage, necessitating coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The treating medical team had to overcome two challenges – coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and thyroid cancer surgery with the removal of a portion of the windpipe.

He said, ‘It was an extremely challenging condition. The patient required two supra-major procedures, each with its own complexities and risks. It would be a test of resilience and medical expertise. The entire team had to work in perfect sync and coordination as both these procedures were planned to be performed in a single session.’

The thyroid cancer surgery involved the delicate task of removing a portion of the trachea and reconstructing it, while the CABG addressed the critical blockage in the coronary arteries.

The involvement of the trachea in thyroid cancer was a rare condition. Moreover, the need for tracheal resection and reconstruction was a highly specialized procedure. Very few medical centers in India offer this procedure.

The surgery was a success. In fact, it was a testament to the combined effort of a dedicated and expert medical team coordination that made this daunting task possible. He acknowledged the patient’s courage and the support of his family members, who played a crucial role in this remarkable medical journey.

Dr. Sandeep Nayak concludes, ‘The entire feat is the proof of the human expertise, and teamwork along with the spirit of hope, perseverance and determination to save the life of a fellow human being. It was a ‘never say die’ attitude of the patient and his family members and the treating medical team.

This story is an ideal example of how modern medicine and human resilience and determination can overcome daunting health challenges.
