ES Ranganathan Discusses India’s Frontline Position in Renewable Energy Revolution

“In recent years, India has set some audacious goals for renewable energy adoption, illustrating a significant commitment to sustainability. One of the most striking of these targets is the aim to achieve 450 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.” Says ES Ranganathan. He further adds, “This goal includes a mix of solar, wind, hydropower, and other sources of clean energy. To put it into perspective, this capacity is more than four times India’s current renewable energy capacity.”

India’s solar energy sector has undergone remarkable growth, cementing its status as one of the world’s prominent solar energy producers. With an installed solar capacity surpassing 70 GW, India stands as the fifth-largest solar power nation on the planet. Mr. Ranganathan emphasizes, “India’s extensive solar power potential, estimated at 748,990 MW, underscores the nation’s wealth of solar resources. This abundant potential is attributed to the fact that most Indian states enjoy sunshine for over 300 days each year.”

When discussing the ‘Solar Power for Farmers’ initiative, ES Ranganathan highlights, “India’s abundant sunlight is an invaluable asset, and the government’s efforts to promote solar power generation at both utility and decentralized levels are commendable.” He goes on to add, “The ‘Solar Power for Farmers’ program not only ensures a dependable electricity source for farmers but also creates additional income opportunities through surplus power sales. This program effectively tackles the twin challenges of rural electrification and enhancing the financial well-being of agricultural communities.”

Harnessing the Power of the Wind

India’s extensive coastline and ample wind resources have made it a significant player in the wind energy sector. Gigantic wind turbines can be seen swaying in harmony with the breeze, generating clean electricity for both urban centers and remote regions. Mr Ranganathan points out “India’s wind energy industry is currently experiencing a remarkable upswing, as the installed capacity has reached an impressive 43,773 megawatts (MW) by June 30, 2023. The nation’s dedicated commitment to sustainable energy sources has yielded a substantial outcome, with wind energy contributing to the generation of an impressive 71,814 million units of electricity during the fiscal year 2022-23.”.

From the vibrant streets of Mumbai to the tranquil vistas of Tamil Nadu, wind energy has seamlessly woven itself into the tapestry of Indian existence, offering a dependable energy source and simultaneously fostering economic development.

Tapping into Water’s Potential

Hydroelectric power has long been a reliable source of renewable energy for India, having a history of around 120 years. The mighty rivers crisscrossing the Indian subcontinent do more than just nourish the land; they power its progress through hydroelectric projects. Both small and large hydroelectric projects harness the energy of these waterways, lighting up homes and industries while minimizing environmental impact.

ES Ranganathan says, “Hydroelectric power provides the flexibility to balance electricity supply with demand, which is crucial for grid stability. This form of energy generation not only contributes to India’s renewable energy portfolio but also plays a crucial role in managing the country’s power grid effectively.”

In India, hydropower initiatives stand as the third-largest contributor to electricity production, constituting 11% of the country’s total installed capacity. This places hydropower behind coal (50%) and renewable sources (30%) in the energy mix. Currently, India boasts 211 substantial hydro projects, each exceeding 25 megawatts, collectively delivering an installed capacity of 46.8 gigawatts. Additionally, there are 41 hydropower projects currently under construction, collectively projected to contribute an additional 17 gigawatts to the nation’s energy production.

Urban Centers Embrace Clean Energy

India’s sprawling cities are not far behind in the renewable energy race. With a surge in urbanization, cities like Delhi and Bengaluru have been quick to adopt clean energy solutions to combat pollution and congestion. Electric rickshaws silently glide through the streets, solar-powered streetlights brighten night markets, and green buildings redefine urban architecture.

ES Ranganathan observes that “these initiatives not only reduce the carbon footprint of the cities but also enhance the quality of life for their residents. Clean, renewable energy is becoming an integral part of urban infrastructure and planning.”

Renewable energy’s impact isn’t confined to urban areas. In remote villages, off-grid solar installations are providing access to electricity for the first time. Ranganathan describes how this transformation is not only illuminating homes but also enabling digital education, healthcare, and economic opportunities in rural India.

He emphasizes that “reliable energy access is a fundamental driver of rural development. It not only improves the quality of life but also opens up new avenues for progress, especially in regions that were previously underserved.”

Pioneering Technological Advancements

In the pursuit of efficient renewable energy usage, Indian scientists and entrepreneurs have been pioneering innovations. Energy-efficient appliances, smart grids, and battery storage solutions are redefining how energy is consumed, stored, and distributed across the nation.

Ranganathan is optimistic about the future, stating, “These innovations not only enhance energy efficiency but also have the potential to reduce costs and make clean energy accessible to a broader segment of the population. India’s innovation in this space has far-reaching implications.”

Government Commitment and Global Cooperation

India’s commitment to renewable energy is reinforced by government policies and international collaborations. Initiatives like the International Solar Alliance (ISA) are facilitating cooperation among solar-rich countries, while subsidies and incentives encourage local adoption.

ES Ranganathan believes that “policy support is crucial in driving the renewable energy agenda. Governments play a pivotal role in creating a conducive environment for investment and innovation in the clean energy sector.”
