Textbooks for first-year MBBS students were launched with much fanfare in Madhya Pradesh in 2022. Later, state governments in at least four other states, including neighbouring Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, announced plans to replicate the project. Yet, while just about 10-15 percent students use these books kept in libraries, no students has opted for annual examination in the language.
