For generations, the May, 1931 massacre of protestors has been commemorated as the beginnings of the freedom movement in Kashmir. Its critics have argued the protests of 1931-132 wer driven by religion, not secularism. That’s only half the truth, though, and the effort to crush Martyrs Day is making it harder to heal Kashmir’s deepest wounds.
