Troubles of trigger-happy America, and why Erdogan hates turkeys

The best international cartoons of the week, chosen by editors at ThePrint.

Adam Zyglis | The Buffalo News

The selected cartoons appeared first in other publications, either in print or online, or on social media, and are credited appropriately.

In today’s featured cartoon, Adam Zyglis mocks the Second Amendment — which gives US citizens the right to bear arms. The mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, left 21 people — 19 children and two teachers — dead and once again sparked debate about strict gun control laws. Conservatives widely cite the amendment to justify their opposition to any new form of gun control.

Andy Davey | Telegraph

Andy Davey comments on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson who currently faces a precarious political future over the ‘partygate‘ scandal. The scandal involves allegations that Johnson and senior aides attended parties at a time when Britain was under lockdown orders because of a surge in Covid cases.

Opposition parties have accused Johnson of trying to draw public attention from the scandal, such as UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s announcement last week of a £5 billion “windfall tax” on oil and gas firms to help wit the cost of living crisis.

Tjeerd Royaards | Twitter/@Royaards

Tjeerd Royaards marks the 100th day of the war in Ukraine. Russia launched its all-out invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.

Maarten Wolterink | Twitter/@mwcartoons

Maarten Wolterink comments on Turkey’s government letter to the United Nations formally asking for its name to be changed to Türkiye. The move is widely seen as a push by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government to rebrand the country and dissociate it from turkey, a large bird native to North America that’s served for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Peter Brookes | The Times

Peter Brookes refers to last week’s vandalism involving one of the world’s most famous paintings — the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. A man dressed as an old lady allegedly smeared cake cream on the painting at the Louvre in Paris last week.
