Thane, May 3 (PTI) Three police personnel have been suspended in Maharashtra’s Thane after they allegedly extorted money from a couple who were visiting the city, an official said on Saturday.

A suspension order was issued on Friday, May 2, citing that the trio’s actions were “not in keeping with the discipline of the police force” and had brought “disrepute to the department”, the official said.

He said the accused constables, Jayesh Ambikar, Rakesh Kunte, and Sonali Marathe, misused a police escort vehicle on the night of April 30 to conduct an unauthorised “inspection” near the Talaopali area.

The trio allegedly intercepted a couple who had come to the city for dinner from neighbouring Mumbai and falsely accused them of engaging in immoral activities, he said.

“They demanded the mobile numbers of their parents, verbally abused the couple, and even assaulted them,” a senior police official said.

He said the constables allegedly threatened the couple with legal action unless they paid a bribe. Under pressure and fearing arrest, the couple transferred Rs 40,500 through an online transaction and were forced to withdraw another Rs 10,000 from the ATM.

The couple immediately lodged a complaint at the Naupada police station, following which an inquiry was conducted, and it was found that the three constables had acted inappropriately, illegally, and in violation of departmental conduct. PTI COR ARU
