New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu Wednesday emphasised the significance of forests and how they support life in a speech at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun.

Today’s world is witnessing rapid advancements in technology and innovation, which are having a detrimental impact on the environment, said the President, highlighting the need for sustainable development and protection of natural resources.

She was speaking at the convocation ceremony of the 2022 batch of the Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer trainees.

Emphasising the importance of valuing and respecting forests as a key to sustainable development, she said forests have played a vital role in regulating the climate, providing a buffer against erosion, and facilitating nutrient cycling.

The President also emphasised the importance of traditional knowledge of tribal communities in connection with forest conservation. She said tribal societies have a deep understanding of the importance of sustainable practices and can play a valuable role in guiding future decision-making.

She urged the forest service officers to adopt a more sustainable and ethical approach, guided by tribal wisdom, in their work. The President expressed confidence that IFS officers will continue to deliver high-quality service and contribute to the protection and preservation of forest resources.

The President also highlighted the need for international cooperation to address the threats facing forest ecosystems and promote sustainable forest management practices.
