New Delhi: Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s condition has worsened since Monday. The Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi said his “health status has worsened”.
Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital Monday after a fall, and he underwent a “lifesaving emergency surgery” that evening to remove a clot from his brain.

In a bulletin issued Tuesday afternoon, the hospital said: “Shri. Pranab Mukherjee’s health condition continues to remain critical at Army Hospital (R&R) Delhi Cantt. The former president who underwent lifesaving emergency surgery for brain clot on 10 August 2020 has not shown any improvement and his health status has worsened. He remains on ventilatory support.”

Mukherjee was rushed to the hospital Monday morning after he was injured in a fall. A CT scan detected the clot in his brain. During a routine pre-surgery test, he also tested positive for Covid-19.

Mukherjee was the President of India between 2012 and 2017, and currently lives in his official Rajaji Marg residence in Delhi along with his daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee, who is a Congress leader.

In the morning bulletin, the first since Mukherjee’s admission, the hospital had said: “Former President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee was admitted to Army Hospital (R&R) Delhi Cantt at 1207 hours on 10 August 2020 in a critical condition. Workup at the hospital revealed a large brain clot for which he underwent emergency life saving surgery. Post surgery he continues to remain critical on ventilatory support. He was also found to be COVID-19 positive.”
