New Delhi: BJP member Pragya Thakur created a controversy on Wednesday with her remark in Lok Sabha during DMK member A Raja’s narration of a statement by Nathuram Godse before a court on why he killed Mahatma Gandhi.

However, after opposition members protested against Thakur’s remarks, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said only the DMK leader’s speech during the discussion on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill will go on record.

Later, the Lok Sabha secretariat issued a official communication, saying Thakur’s remarks are “non-recorded”.

Raja said that Godse himself admitted that he had nursed a grudge against Gandhi for 32 years before finally deciding to assassinate him.

Godse killed Gandhi because he believed in a particular philosophy, Raja added.

While the opposition members protested the interruption by Thakur, the BJP members persuaded her to sit down. After which, the Speaker said only A Raja’s statement will be taken on record.

Later, during the course of discussion on the Bill, Congress’ Gaurav Gogoi also took strong objection to Thakur’s remarks and demaded that the member should apologise for it.

During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Thakur had described Godse as a patriot, triggering a huge political storm.

Later, she had apologised for her statement.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said, “The remarks made about Gandhiji or Nathuram Godse are very bad and very wrong for society…. She has sought an apology but I would never be able to forgive her fully.”

“Nathuram Godse was a deshbhakt, he is and will remain a deshbhakt. Those calling him a terrorist should instead look at themselves. They will be given a befitting reply in this election,” the controversial leader had said while attending a roadshow.

She was replying to a question over actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s remark that independent India’s first “extremist was a Hindu”, a reference to Godse.

The had BJP immediately got into damage control and distanced itself from Thakur’s statement and asked her to tender a public apology.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday said Thakur has explained to the party that she did not support Nathuram Godse and was only speaking about revolutionary Udham Singh.

  1. Pragya Thakur must be suspended from parliament. BJP will never suspend her. Terrorist like Pragya Thakur must be punished to make an example for others like minded

  2. It’s a shame that worthless people are able to call aloud assassins and killers of Mahatma Gandhi as Patriots right in the very Parliament of India.

Still they walk scot free and smiling.

I m speechless and filled with despair and disgust at the state of our nation and the ridiculous pomp and grandeur with which people have elected such vicious leaders to our government in power. HOW IS IT EVEN BEING TOLERATED IN THIS TOLERANT COUNTRY ????

  3. Seldom these politicians make effort to gain publicity by doing some good work. They find pride in publicity for wrong doings. This lady has no shame and rather takes pride every time by calling godse as a hero. BJP is really losing it by not just keeping such people in its party but also endorsing them and promoting them.

  4. I believe that most of the nationalist Indians consider Godse as a patriot and MK Gandhi as an anti national traitor, however they were afraid to admit this openly due to MK Gandhi’s immense political clout even after his death. My only regret is that why Godse did not do it much earlier. India would have been a developed super power long ago, if MK Gandhi & Co. were eliminated anytime before 1947.

  5. If Gandhi would have not got assininated at right time entire Kashmir Hyderabad junagad should have became part of Pakistan and there should have been a connecting highway in between east Andh west Pakistan 10 KMS wide with Muslims settling round it dividing India Mr nathuram godse was indeed a deshbhakth he is deliberately neglected to appease Muslims and secularitis Gandhi should have been assinated long before for his Islamic apessement in my opinion Mr Gandhi is not the father of the nation India existed long before Gandhi there are many other fighters like Mr savarkar And Mr Bose who are neglected deliberately by the congress Nehru and Gandhi family for there selfish intensions

  6. Believing that a DESH BHAKT can’t had murdered MK Gandhi is the most laughable assumption and therefore Nathuram Godse can’t be a DESH BHAKT. Unlike India’s librandus and sickularists, Nathuram Godse was indeed the real DESH BHAKT for who MK Gandhi’s actions were pro Pakistan. MK Gandhi was as much responsible for India’s partition as Nehru and Jinnah.
