Imphal: A Manipur police officer was ambushed and shot dead by suspected Kuki insurgents Tuesday morning, indicating that the ethnic unrest in the northeastern state that began in May is far from over.

Chingtham Anand Kumar was posted in Moreh town on the border of India and Myanmar. He died after being targeted by a sniper from the back while he was cleaning a helipad in the town. Police sources said officers fired back at the insurgents and a combing operation had been launched.

Kumar’s body was taken to Imphal’s Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) morgue for post-mortem.
