Itanagar, Jul 21 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday called for a detailed research report based on a newly released book on the ‘Puroiks’, stating that its findings could guide meaningful policy interventions for “one of the state’s most marginalised communities”.
Speaking at the launch event of the book ‘Media Representation and Accessibility of the Puroiks’ at his office, Khandu emphasised that it offers valuable ethnographic insight into the social, economic, and cultural struggles of the community, “long neglected in both mainstream discourse and policy”, an official statement said.
“The book sheds much-needed light on marginalised communities. Through its ethnographic depth, it vividly captures the lives of the ‘Puroiks’, one of the most under-represented indigenous groups of Arunachal Pradesh,” the CM said.
Khandu noted that the state government has undertaken steps to address longstanding inequities faced by the community, including formation of the Puroik Welfare Board, introduction of skill development and livelihood programmes, and educational support measures.
He urged Prem Taba, one of the book’s authors, to submit a comprehensive version of his findings directly to the CM’s office so that the state government could explore practical implementation of the recommendations.
Among the key recommendations in the book are introducing bilingual education, enhancing digital literacy, expanding access to micro-loans, providing mental health support, and creating platforms for community storytelling.
The authors also offer critical reflections on the limited effectiveness of certain government schemes and call for collaborative initiatives involving the state, civil society, and the community. PTI UPL RBT
