India will observe state mourning on 11 September to mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth

Condoling her death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he would always remember the late monarch for her ‘warmth and kindness’.

New Delhi: India will observe a day’s state mourning Sunday in memory of late regent Queen Elizabeth II who passed Thursday in Scotland aged 96.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said the whole country would participate in formally condoling the death of Britain’s longest-ruling monarch.

The Queen passed in her Scottish highland retreat, the Balmoral Castle, Thursday afternoon after a brief illness.

Upon her death, her eldest son Prince Charles automatically became the King though the formal proclamation about the accession would be on Saturday. The Prince of Wales will rule as King Charles III. He will address Britain Friday evening.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined international dignitaries in commiserating the monarch’s passing as soon as news broke late Thursday evening.

Modi tweeted that the Queen “would be remembered as a stalwart of our times”. “She provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people. She personified dignity and decency in public life. Pained by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and people of the UK in this sad hour,” he wrote.

Modi remembered the “memorable meetings with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” during his visits to the country in 2015 and 2018. “I will never forget her warmth and kindness. During one of the meetings she showed me the handkerchief Mahatma Gandhi gifted her on her wedding. I will always cherish that gesture,” the Prime Minister added.
