New Delhi: A student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is suspected to have taken his own life, the Chennai Police said Friday.

The second-year B. Tech student’s body has been taken for autopsy, while preliminary investigation is underway, they said. The boy was from Madhya Pradesh.

This is the fourth case of suspected suicide in the premier institute reported this year and the twelfth since 2018.

On 2 April, a PhD student died by suicide in his room in Tamil Nadu’s Velachery.

The 32-year-old from Bengal posted a WhatsApp status on 31 March that said: “I am sorry not good enough.”

Seeing the status, his friends rushed to his home and found the student hanging.

On 14 March, a third-year B. Tech student hanged himself in the campus. He was identified as Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai, 20, from Andhra Pradesh.

A month earlier – on 14 February — a research scholar from Maharashtra hanged himself in his room inside the campus.
