Panaji, Jun 26 (PTI) A zoo inside the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa has reopened for visitors, nearly three months after it was closed to tackle an avian influenza outbreak, the forest department said on Thursday.
The zoo in Sattari taluka, over 40 km from the state capital Panaji, was shut on April 1 after three civets and two jungle cats died of avian flu.
Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane announced on X that the facility has reopened.
“After a brief closure as a precautionary measure, Bondla Zoo has reopened for visitors starting Wednesday, following confirmation from NIHSAD (National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases), Bhopal, that samples (from the zoo) have tested negative for avian influenza,” he said.
Rane said all necessary biosecurity protocols were followed during this period.
“According to the protocols of the Central Zoo Authority, the zoo could only reopen after two consecutive negative test reports for avian influenza were received,” said officials. PTI RPS NR
