New Delhi: Former Chief of Army Staff Manoj Naravane on Monday defended his doctorate thesis on Nagaland’s institutions and development at the Punjabi University, Patiala.

His thesis is titled “Harmonising Naga Customs, Traditions and Institutions in the Context of Peace and Development in Nagaland”.

He also tweeted a photo with his examiner and faculty of the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies – who almost stood to attention with the 28th Army chief.

He thanked Dr Kamal Kinger, Dr Kuldip Singh of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, his guide Dr Umrao Singh, Dr Kewal Krishan and Dr Inderjeet Singh for “giving him a patient hearing”.

A Twitter user was certain that the general had “defended” his thesis well, as he was India’s “Defender-in-Chief”.

Another user was happy that Naravane wore the Ao — major Naga ethnic group — waistcoat. The ex-Army chief thanked the user in the Ao tongue, and replied “Kanga Pelar”.

The general served as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) till his superannuation on 30 April, 2022. He had also served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command (2018-19) and handled counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast.
