Chandigarh, May 11 (PTI) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini slammed the Congress on Saturday, alleging that the party believes in keeping issues lingering and then doing politics around those.

On the contrary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi does what he says, Saini said.

“Could the Congress have scrapped Article 370 (of the Constitution that bestowed a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir)? Its thinking is to keep issues lingering and then do politics around those,” Saini said, addressing poll rallies in Shahabad and Kalayat under the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency.

Campaigning for Naveen Jindal, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate from Kurukshetra in the ongoing parliamentary polls, Saini said the country has witnessed progress in all spheres under Modi’s leadership.

Appealing to people to ensure Jindal’s poll victory, Saini told the gathering that it was the power of their vote that enabled the BJP-led Centre to take decisions like scrapping Article 370 and enacting laws like the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the one against instant “triple talaq”.

He said only Modi can take a pledge to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country and it is obvious that the Congress will have a problem with it.

Taking on the opposition party, the BJP leader alleged that it ruled the country for 55-60 years but failed to fulfil even the basic needs of people.

On the other hand, the country is progressing at a great pace under Modi’s leadership, he said.

Now, when Congress leaders feel that people are not supporting their party, they are resorting to falsehood, Saini alleged.

He said the Congress only gave the “garibi hatao” slogan but took no steps towards poverty alleviation even when it was in power for nearly six decades.

“Now, the prince of the Congress (Rahul Gandhi) says he will eradicate poverty in one stroke. Which Aladdin ka chirag (magic lamp) has he got now when they failed to do it in six decades?” Saini asked.

“The Congress has nothing to show except corruption and scams. That is why it resorts to falsehood,” he alleged.

In Kurukshetra, which is scheduled to go to polls along with the nine other Lok Sabha seats in Haryana in the sixth phase of the seven-phase election on May 25, Jindal’s nearest rivals are Indian National Lok Dal’s (INLD) Abhay Singh Chautala and Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Sushil Gupta.

The AAP is a constituent of the INDIA opposition bloc. While the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has fielded its nominee from Kurukshetra, the remaining nine seats in Haryana are being contested by the Congress.

At the Shahabad rally, Saini released a vision document for the constituency.

Under it, Jindal has promised to develop Kurukshetra as a model constituency.

The BJP candidate has said he would set up skill-training centres in Kurukshetra and Kaithal district, in which 10,000 youngsters will undergo training every year, while a modern training centre for sportsmen will be set up in Kurukshetra.

“It is a matter of fortune for us that a person who was the MP from here is the chief minister today,” Jindal said, referring to Saini.

“There is great enthusiasm among people and they want to bring back Narendra Modi as the prime minister again,” the BJP candidate said.

Jindal also promised to give a spiritual and religious identity to Kurukshetra on the world stage.

“Our aim is to provide modern facilities in terms of religious tourism, employment and cleanliness,” he said. PTI SUN RC
