The government will soon introduce the BIS certification mark for stainless steel and aluminium utensils, according to a press statement by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.

The move is aimed at improving the safety and quality of kitchen items.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has developed stringent standards for the design and construction of kitchen utensils and will introduce mandatory certification for the utensils. The utensils will have the BIS mark to indicate their authenticity.

The BIS standards include requirements for the safe composition of materials used in the manufacturing of utensils, the shape and dimensions of the utensils, the workmanship and finish of the utensils, and the performance parameters of the utensils.

The government believes that the adoption of these standards will improve the overall quality and safety of the kitchen utensils.

Stainless steel utensils are considered to be of high durability and are widely used in professional and home kitchens. They are made of an alloy of steel with chromium and other metals, which makes them corrosion-resistant and economically viable. Aluminium utensils are lightweight and efficient and also used extensively in hospitals, schools, and other healthcare settings. The BIS has set stringent standards for the quality and durability of these utensils.

The government hopes that the introduction of the BIS certification will encourage the manufacturers to adhere to the best practices in the production of kitchen utensils. This will, in turn, lead to improved customer experience and provide a level of safety to them.
