Durg, May 15 (PTI) A Bangladeshi woman has been arrested for allegedly staying illegally in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, police said on Thursday.
Panna Bibi (25) had illegally entered India from Bangladesh eight years ago and was staying in Supela area for the last two years using a fake identity, said an official.
Following a tip-off, a special task force (STF) of the district police apprehended her on Wednesday from the house she had rented, Durg Superintendent of Police Vijay Agrawal said at a press conference here.
The STF headed by Satya Prakash Tiwari, City Superintendent of Police (Bhilai Nagar- Durg), constituted specially to identify Bangladeshis / Rohingya living illegally in the state, swung into action after police received inputs, he said.
During interrogation, the woman initially identified herself as Anjali Singh, a resident of East Delhi and produced an Aadhaar card. But it looked suspicious, and she broke down during further questioning and revealed her real name and that she belongs to Didhirpar in Khulna district of Bangladesh, Agrawal said.
Bibi allegedly entered India illegally through Bongaon Petropol in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal without a valid passport and visa about eight years ago and reached Kolkata where she lived illegally in Sonagachi for about five years using the name Kakoli Ghosh, he said.
Subsequently, she shifted to Delhi and lived there for about one year.
There, she got acquainted with a girl named Pooja, a resident of Bhilai, and came here with her two years ago. She lived in Supela using the name Kakoli Ghosh/ Anjali Singh, the SP said.
During this period, she visited Bangladesh multiple times by illegally crossing the border using the same route through North 24 Parganas. Her call records showed she was continuously in touch with her family and relatives on more than a dozen mobile numbers of Bangladesh, the official said.
She also availed of medical treatment in India using fake identity documents, said Tiwari.
Bibi was booked under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Foreigners Act 1946 and Indian Passport Act 1920, the SP said, adding that further investigation is underway.
Legal action will also be taken against Suraj Sao, her landlord, for allegedly not informing local police about the tenant, he added. PTI COR TKP KRK
