New Delhi: An undergraduate student of Ashoka University in Haryana’s Sonipat district has allegedly died by suicide and his body was found in a nearby area outside the campus, police said Wednesday.

“We received a case of a missing person on 26 September and started our investigation. Later on, his dead body was found in the nearby area of Sector 7. He had consumed poison and told a passerby about his condition and an ambulance was called. Unfortunately, the boy passed away before reaching the hospital,” said a police officer at the Sonipat police station, who didn’t wish to be named.

According to an email sent out by the university, the student, who was from the 2020-2023 batch, had left the campus on Sunday. Next day, the parents informed the university about their son not responding to any calls or messages. Subsequently, the Sonipat Police were informed about the matter. They later confirmed that the student had taken his life while away from campus.

Police said the reason behind taking the extreme step is still unknown. However, they informed that the student was the only child of his parents.

‘An extremely brilliant, gifted student’

The university said the student was a quiet and gifted student who performed very well academically.

The university in the email said, “He was an extremely brilliant student with a great future ahead of him. He was loved and mentored by his teachers. Ever since he joined the university in 2020, he and his parents have received full support from the faculty, staff and student services of the university. He will be remembered as a quiet, gifted student whose untimely passing away has left the Ashoka community with a profound sense of loss.”

A university spokesperson in a statement to ThePrint said, “The university is in constant touch with the student’s family and is providing them with all possible assistance. He was a bright student and performed very well academically. He was well-regarded by both his teachers and fellow students, and well-supported by all departments of the university.”
