Agra: Within hours of brutally assaulting a tourist couple from Delhi, the Agra police apprehended five local men Monday. The incident happened inside a Petha shop where they brutally hit the man with sticks.

Speaking to ThePrint, DCP (City) Suraj Kumar Rai said that the police came across a viral video showing a man being assaulted by a group of men using sticks and other blunt weapons inside a Petha shop. Upon inquiry, it was found that the incident occurred in the Tajganj police station area.

Narrating the incident, Rai said that the couple was travelling in their car, bearing a Delhi number, when they got embroiled in a dispute with some locals, who then started beating up the man. In an attempt to save himself, the man ran into the petha shop where he was followed by the locals and brutally assaulted for several minutes.

The nearby shopkeepers tried to chase the attackers but their effort was hindered by a ‘Shiv Parikrama’ religious procession being held in the city. The attackers, taking advantage of the crowd, escaped the site. However, their faces were captured in the CCTV camera of the shop.

While the Delhi couple left the city without filing a complaint, the Agra police took suo moto cognizance of the incident and registered a case against the attackers. Three teams were formed to track down the attackers based on the CCTV footage retrieved from the petha shop.

All five attackers — identified as Deepak, Saurabh, Brijesh, Sunil and Karan, all aged between 20 and 22 years — were produced before the magistrate on Tuesday, from where they were sent to judicial custody.
