New Delhi: The Shahi Imam of Delhi Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, has called the murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli “not only an act of cowardice but an act against Islam”.

In a statement, Bukhari said: “The inhuman incident on the murder of a man named Kanhaiya Lal by two persons named Riaz and Ghous, and that too in the name of the Holy Prophet, is not only an act of cowardice but an act against Islam, unlawful and inhuman. I, myself and on behalf of the Muslims of India, with all the vehemence at our disposal, condemn this act.”

The tailor was murdered in broad daylight in his shop Tuesday by Riyaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammed for allegedly putting up social media posts in support of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s controversial comments on the Prophet.

The duo have been arrested. The case is being probed by counter-terrorism task force, the National Investigation Agency.

Bukhari also said Islam was a religion of “peace and tranquility”. “The life of the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) is full of numerous examples of compassion, tolerance, generosity and humanitarianism. Had the persons who committed this barbaric act studied the life and character of the Holy Prophet and had they been well versed with the spirit of Quran and shariah, they would not have committed the heinous crime”.

Congress, which is in power in Rajasthan, has said the Prime Minister should appeal to people to not engage in such acts. Party leader Mallikarjun Kharge said: “Not just in Rajasthan, such cases have been reported from Uttar Pradesh, Assam, among others. The Prime Minister and Home Minister should break their silence. The PM should appeal to the people not to engage in such incidents. People should not give provocative hate speeches.”

Kharge also lauded Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s “swift action” in nabbing the culprits.

Meanwhile, the BJP has firmly held the state government responsible for the attack. “Such incidents are being continuously reported in Rajasthan. Terror organisations are thriving in the state and the state government has directly or indirectly provoked them,” said BJP leader Rajyavardhan Rathore.

Kanhaiya Lal was cremated on Wednesday in Udaipur, parts of which are under curfew. Internet services have also been suspended for 24 hours after the murder.

Meanwhile, the NIA has registered a case in the murder. “Teams have already reached Udaipur and requisite action for expeditious investigation of the case has already been initiated,” the NIA said.
