Viral photos of Earth ‘captured from Chandrayaan-2’ are old & digitally-generated

Some of the images being passed off as those taken by Chandrayaan-2 are from 2008 NASA animation, while another is of a 2009 volcanic eruption in Russia.

New Delhi: Images and photographs wrongly claiming to be those of Earth captured from Chandrayaan-2 have gone viral on social media in the last 24 hours.

Chandrayaan-2 was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on 22 July, and is expected to get into orbit around the Moon in early September. However, all the images and photographs purportedly clicked by it are not only quite old, but also digitally-generated.

One such image, posted by Guwahati resident Sajjan Sethia on Facebook has been shared 2,561 times and has got 4,500 likes.

Saroop Chattopadhyay, who identifies himself as West Bengal state secretary of the ‘Nationalist Trinamool Congress Party’ and a blogger, has shared over half-a-dozen photographs of Earth taken from different angles.

Nothing to do with Chandrayaan-2

One of the images dates back to 2008, and is from NASA’s Conceptual Image Lab, which creates animation and visual effects designed to educate and entertain.

Another picture, shared by one Bilal Khan on Twitter, is a 2009 NASA image, capturing early stage eruption of the Sarychev volcano on Kuril Island in Russia on 12 June 2009.

ISRO’s own website does not carry any image taken from Chandrayaan-2. It features latest updates from the mission, and a pre-launch photo gallery.
