New Delhi: Indian nationals have been asked to immediately leave Kharkiv, a day after a medical student from Karnataka was killed in shelling in Ukraine’s second largest city.
The advisory asked citizens to leave for Pesochin, Babaye or Bezlyudovka settlements “under all circumstances” by 6 pm local time. It also urged students to leave on foot if they can’t find any vehicles or buses and are in railway station.

Stranded students in Ukraine have also alleged that the Indian embassy in Ukraine had been of no help to them and many were leaving the city on their own. It is estimated that there are about 3,500 Indian students enrolled at Kharkiv National Medical University.
The instructions came amid assurances by Ambassador-designate of Russia to India Denis Alipov, who said that Moscow is “actively working” towards activating “humanitarian corridors” to evacuate Indian citizens stuck in the Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Sumy.
Several Indian students, stranded in various parts of Ukraine, have started moving towards the country’s western regions — bordering states such as Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland
Kharkiv is located in the northeastern side of Ukraine, barely 25 miles away from the Russian border.
The Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Sumy are witnessing intense fighting with Russian troops seen attacking residential areas.
