Exploring Chemistry Beyond the Classroom: A Heartfelt Thank You to Professor Gokul Ganesan, Jai Hind College

I’m a Msc student of Chemistry, from Jai Hind College. I completed the program last year in 2024. As a gratitude I’d like to share a short passage about my experience at Jai Hind College studying Science and my heartful gratitude to my teacher.

Prof. Gokul Ganesan teaches Chemistry for BSc & MSc courses. His areas of research are synthesis; computational studies; material chemistry etc. Prof. taught us in the most interesting and unique way. He never told us to read notes or complete the syllabus. It was beyond the ways! A great story-teller and Chemistry. Our prof would in the first lecture open the subject to us in the most fascinating and intriguing way, the curiosity would go on till the end of the syllabus.

As students it was but to sit in a Conference! With the latest research papers up his sleeves he taught us humbly like Kindergarteners. A lay man would understand, and enjoy most of the part.

At the end of class, we would be awed and curious about the topic as it would unfold after 1:45 minutes.

Practical
The practicals were equally fascinating. Masters students are mostly expected to complete practicals on their own in a group. However, our teacher would demonstrate the experiment once for explanation, then give each individual a type of compound to carry on the experiment. He would go to each student in the lab and hand holdedly help whenever we were stuck. He would also share with us the other results one could’ve gotten even if we derived the right conclusion. He had every student’s progress on the computer for each practical. It was like working under a great Scientist.

Once i was very afraid at 5pm to ask about a result, it’s the saturation time. I assumed I could be kicked out forever, yet he smiled and said come say.

He says that,”students should do better than the teachers”. He told us if he leaves us to sort the practical experiments on our own then we’d be stuck with the same problems the previous batches were. He taught us everything on the masters level and beyond, so we could build up on that.

Syllabus
He made the most unique and tailored syllabus for the MSc program . It consists of the University portion in addition to some topics from Competitive exams and in research areas. He taught us every single sub-topic in the most easy and interesting way. He also generously helped us with self-study units which would be for internal assessments.

Internships & Competitive exams
In addition he brought us Internships, moocs, extra competitive lectures for students appearing for any exam even if it were not related to Chemistry. He would take a google feedback form from every student about their requirement in studies for extra help, interest for Internships in various prestigious Institutes, industries and laboratories, for eg, BARC; IITs; TIFR;ICT etc for those in interest for academia and BASF; FDA;BTRA; various Industries and laboratories for those in interest for R&D.

We had a chem series of guest lectures from prominent researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs in the field. All of them there at the college fb website!

We also had a Computational Chemistry workshop in college free of cost, workshops to prestigious Institute labs, a cosmetic formulations workshop at ICT and Industry, and much more. It was indeed a buffet, one could explore and chose its path for the future. And it was very fun, exciting and thrilling! He also facilitated us with Certificates for the same.
We had hands-on experience on tools and Instruments, which we would choose as possible career paths after the MSc program. We didn’t had to seek outside help or future guidance, it was all in one pack!

My experience
At the orientation, I learned it was a great program and I took the admission for Organic Chemistry. I was confused at the beginning to select the subjects, so I asked my teacher about it. The answers he’d shared were not even on google. It was like meeting Santa.

I was miserable at studies and was at a brink to fail in all papers. My teachers would be surprised as well seeing my weak subject understanding.

Once I asked him for guidance, and he shared a method of studying which was not only extremely Simple but also made the concepts really easy to understand. He simply told me to accept all the lectures as they were without any thoughts, and he also told us to do classroom studying instead of piling it all up for the exams.

It worked miraculously! I cleared all the papers with good marks, and most importantly understood the theories and learned the best approach to study.
Apart from studying, we also had time for co-curricular activities and courses, because of classroom studying.

I’m very heartily thankful to my teacher and all my teachers for their invaluable teachings, encouragement, and guidance. May God bless you with everlasting happiness, joy and peace.

Thank you very much
