A very true description of the predicament of Muslim women, and how as in any patriarchal socio-economic and familial structure, Muslim women face the greatest opposition from their own society. As in most religions, in Islam too it’s the privilege of the clergy, most of them specially in rural areas, hardly educated, except in rot learning the Quran, impose their interpretation on women.
For this Muslim women may conduct their Quran study groups without any clergy, as many Muslim Women presently must be able to do so, with some education and exposure. They may highlight those parts in the Quran that speak about women’s equality and rights . Actually they may use such an opportunity to compare those verses with the provisions in the Indian Constitution that is supportive of such equality and rights. Well actually most religions do have progressive texts and interpretation of religious texts and those need to be espoused as one important strategy for women’s empowerment and rights. Thanks Zakia, Thanks Banu for holding up the mirror to those who want to not see.

Liberal are just Islamist now
Liberals are afraid of the educated Muslim woman asking for her rights. She is strong enough to undo their politics of appeasement.
